TIM ARMSTRONG: AVENUES & ALLEYWAYS
Opening Reception: Friday, January 24 · 8-11 pm
Exhibition Dates: January 24 – February 22, 2014
SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is proud to present the first ever solo show by musician, songwriter, and artist Tim Armstrong (Operation Ivy, Rancid, The Transplants), featuring never before seen artwork. The raw, hard-edged spontaneity in Armstrong’s art mirrors his approach to music making, exemplifying a “passion is more important than precision” aesthetic that speaks to the creative rebellion dwelling inside us all.
Avenues & Alleyways features drawings, paintings, watercolors, and mixed media works on found materials that have been collaboratively selected by Armstrong and Shepard Fairey. The range in medium, size, and subject matter provide a well-rounded presentation of Armstrong’s honest and unrefined artistic charm. The imagery includes figures in Armstrong’s life, tools of his trade, album covers for deceased musicians, and poetic ruminations scrawled across simple line drawings.
Tim Armstrong’s art has a visceral lyricism and immediacy that screams “if you feel it in your guts…express it with your hands!” The D.I.Y. punk ethos of honesty and emphasis on raw instinct that is so integral to Tim’s music is clearly evident in his tremendous body of gestural and poetic visual art. I was amazed by the quality and diversity within Tim’s “Tim Timebomb” project for which he created a song and piece of art each day for a year. If Tim’s drive and proliferation in multiple mediums don’t inspire you to get off your ass, nothing will! – Shepard Fairey
The first time I heard of Shepard was back in 1991 at my punk house in the East Bay, when I saw his stickers on our wall, and I’ve been a fan ever since. It’s an honor to be working with him and Subliminal on this art show. As long as I can remember, I have drawn or painted pictures. I’m looking forward to sharing it with everyone. – Tim Armstrong
A box set (Edition of 100) containing 45 screen prints by Armstrong, modeled after the 7 inch 45 format, will be released opening night with a limit of one per person / household. All prints in the box set will be signed by Armstrong and numbered. Avenues & Alleyways will be on view through Saturday, February 22.
About the Artist: Tim Armstrong is a Grammy Award-winning musician, songwriter, artist, director, poet, record producer and independent label owner. During the 1980s he served in several hardcore and ska punk bands, most notably the band Operation Ivy. In 1991, he formed the seminal punk rock band Rancid, which is credited with the mainstream revival of punk rock in the mid-1990s, and is one the most commercially successful and respected punk bands of all time. Armstrong’s musical influence extends far beyond the punk rock realm – in 2003 he co-wrote eight songs with platinum selling artist Pink for her album Try This, which included the Grammy Award winning single Trouble. Tim grabbed another Grammy in 2013 for his work on Jimmy Cliff’s album Rebirth. Other notable collaborations have included Joe Strummer, Cypress Hill, the Tim Timebomb & Friends series, and Travis Barker of Blink 182 (of which he has released 3 records with their band the Transplants), just to name a few.
About the Gallery: SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is a multifunctional gallery space promoting diverse forms of art while providing a forum for contemporary dialogue. It was established by Shepard Fairey and Blaze Blouin in 1995 and played an integral part in introducing skateboarding culture and design to the art world. Now located in the historic Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park, SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS continues to offer a platform for artistic exploration and innovation. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 12 to 6 pm.
